Meet the Siberian Husky

Siberian huskies are medium sized working dogs, bred for endurance and running. They are friendly, happy dogs who need an experienced pup parent to guide them. Siberians are pack animals who enjoy family life and do well with children and other dogs. Their friendly nature, even with strangers, means they don’t make good guard dogs. They are very intelligent and strong-willed. Firm, positive training, and socialization from puppyhood is very important for the Siberian Husky to become a well-behaved member of the family.

Siberians enjoy human company and like having a job to do, even if it is just jogging with you. These dogs love to explore and are quick learners, so they’re always ready for new adventures. Siberians are very social and need the company of people or other dogs. Doggy daycare and dog park’s are great for socialization and exercise. If left alone too much or bored, they can be destructive (we recommend crate training from puppyhood) or if left alone outside, they are known to escape, eager to explore. Their love for running may overcome their love for their guardians at times too, so secure fencing and a microchip is a must!

Siberians have a high prey drive and can’t resist chasing cats, small animals, or livestock so early introduction to other animals is very important. With proper introduction, they can do great with other animals. Siberians are diggers, particularly in warm weather, because they like to create cool places to lie in. They don’t tend to bark but they do talk/howl.

Siberians have beautiful fluffy, thick double coats that require routine grooming. Their ears are close-fitting and sit high on the head. One of the most striking features of this breed is their almond-shaped eyes.

Health

Compared to some breeds, a Siberians lifespan is long, usually 12-15 years. Being aware of health problems can help your pup live the happiest and healthiest life possible. A nutritious diet and exercise combined, they are generally a healthy breed. However there are a few common health conditions they are prone to.

Diet & Nutrition

Feeding a high-quality food designed for their stage in life (puppy, adult, senior) is essential for a healthy skin and coat. Siberians were bred to be able to work hard on little food, they don’t eat as much as you think so you need to be careful to not overfeed your pup. It’s important to keep them at a healthy weight, even a couple of extra pounds can affect your dog’s health.

Siberian huskies have beautiful coats that come in a multitude of colors and markings including black, red, gray, white, agouti and piebald. They have 3 main coat types. Standard, plush, and wooly. We focus on the elegant wooly coat. A wooly coat Siberian has a thicker undercoat and much longer hair.

Their eyes can also range in color, they can have blue eyes, brown eyes, amber eyes, one of each color (bi-eyes) or even one eye with both blue/brown/green (parti-eyes)
